Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?
Oh, summer. When the temperature and humidity rise and we keep our ACs on full-blast. There’s nothing quite like walking out of the heat into your cool, air-conditioned home. Except you walk in and it feels hotter inside than out and your AC is blowing hot air. That feeling of dread creeps in. But fear not! Call Dad is here to help you with some reasons your system might be on the fritz and how to get it back on track (with or without us)! After all, Dad always gives that needed piece of comforting advice.
Common Reasons Your AC Might Be Blowing Warm Air
1. Thermostat Settings Check your thermostat to make sure it’s set to AC mode. It might sound silly, but sometimes the thermostat gets an accidental nudge in the wrong direction. Also be sure it’s not just set to ‘fan only’ with the AC setting off. And (duh) not set to heat mode! If your AC is blowing warm air, it could be as simple as your thermostat is instructing it to!
2. Check Your Filters It’s easy to forget about those little boogers. Locate where your filter(s) are located and inspect them to see if they’re very dirty. Dirty air filters can cause a restriction in the system and cause your AC to freeze up or stop working! If it is dirty, let it run a little bit with no air filter and see if that thermostat starts inching down! Keeping your air filters clean is important not just to the function but also the longevity of your system!
3. Refrigerant Levels Many people know refrigerant by its name brand, Freon. But Freon is just a name brand for refrigerants! It’s the amazing substance that flows through your AC to take the heat out of your house and cool the inside. An AC that’s low on Freon can’t remove the heat from your home resulting in it turning on but blowing warm air. This is typically due to a leak since an AC runs on a closed loop. This isn’t a quick DIY job, and it's time to call in an expert!
4. Dirty Outdoor Coils The condenser coil in your outdoor unit is important to removing the heat from your home. When a condenser coil gets particularly clogged up, it can cause a restriction (like a very dirty air filter)! Inspect the outdoor coil and if it looks filthy, this could be a reason your AC isn’t working. The pros use a special coil cleaner to get outdoor coils spic and span, but you can use a water hose to see if removing some of that build up makes a difference in the temperature inside!
5. Electrical Issues Your AC is made up of both mechanical and electrical components. Electrical issues can be dangerous to troubleshoot, but you can try flipping the breaker.
6. Blocked or Closed Vents If only a section of your home isn’t cooling, it’s best to make sure no one has accidentally closed a vent or moved furniture over one. However, if it’s just blowing warm air out of all of the vents, that’s an indication that something else is wrong.
