AC Stopped Working? 7 Helpful tips before calling for AC service or AC repair!
On a hot day, an unexpected AC breakdown can be frustrating. But before you call for an ac repair technician, try these seven helpful tips to troubleshoot your system!
Start At The Thermostat:
Many smart thermostats are set on a schedule and that schedule sometimes gets off. Make sure that it’s set to the right mode (heating or cooling) and the batteries (if applicable), have been replaced. If you have a programmable thermostat, double-check the schedule to ensure it’s programmed correctly.
Inspect the Air Filter:
A dirty filter can restrict your AC’s airflow and decrease the efficiency of your air conditioner. With enough restriction, it can even cause it to break down! Check the filter. If it looks dirty, take it completely out and replace it as soon as possible! Most filters should be replaced around every 1-3, depending on usage, traffic and pets in the home, and the type of filter you have.
Examine the Circuit Breaker:
When your AC isn’t cutting on at all, the problem could be a tripped breaker. Check the breaker panel and reset any tripped breakers for the AC unit. If it continues to trip, there is likely an underlying electrical issue or issue with the air conditioner that will need repair.
Check the Outdoor Unit:
While it’s always recommended to leave cleaning the outdoor unit to the professionals, it’s a good idea visually inspect the outdoor unit. The outdoor condensing unit can pick up all sorts of grass clippings and dirt, restricting airflow and also efficiency. Inspect the unit for any leaves, dirt, or plants growing into the unit. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit. If it looks very dirty, this could be the cause of the breakdown, and it’s time to Call Dad!
Check Your Airflow:
Check the airflow from the vents in each room of your home. If the issue is isolated to one area, check that all of the air vents are completely open. This could also be the sign of a zoning system failure.
Listen for Unusual Sounds:
Strange noises in your indoor or outdoor unit like grinding, banging, or squealing could be a sign of issues with a component of the air conditioner and means your AC should be checked out. Then, it’s time to Call Dad! While some minor noises are normal, constant or loud sounds might mean it’s time to have us look at it.
Inspect the Condensate Drains:
A clogged drain line can cause water to back up and overflow which can lead to water damage and mold growth. Your AC can generate up to a gallon of water an hour! If you’re able to locate the drain line, make sure nothing is blocking the exit to the outside of your home. A drain pan (the pan under the indoor unit) that’s filled with water can also trip emergency shut off switches.
